Full Description

2017: Evaluation trenching identified a series of field boundary ditches that were recorded on early Ordnance Survey maps of the area, which are belived to have been back-filled in the mid-20th century, as well as features possibly relating to the WW2 accomodation units nearby. A small number of later post-medieval ditches were noted that apppear to lie within the present field alignments/systems. A single pit with a large quantity of fired clay and charcoal gragments was found towards the western end of the site and a radiocarbon date ahs been sought for it (S1)(S2).

2013: A desk-based assessment indicated there is a limited potential for encountering archaeological remains dating from the prehistoric through to the Anglo-Saxon period along the proposed route. There is a slightly higher potential for encountering remains of the medieval period, particularly towards the western end of the route where a documented deer park may be present. Overall, due to the lack of archaeological work undertaken in this area, the Proposed Development Area’s archaeological potential is relatively unknown (S3).
