Full Description

This was composed of eight opposing postholes of which seven (1519, 1520, 1344, 1343, 1345, 1350 and 1369) were found; the eighth would have been completely destroyed by ditch 0510. The postholes were between 0.7m and 0.9m in diameter and 0.2 and 0.28m deep and were filled with large chalk lumps set in brown sand. Postholes 1369, 1519 and 1520 were cut by either ditch 0510 or the later feature 1313 on its north edge. Finds were occasional sherds of Roman pottery with one sherd of intrusive Ipswich ware from posthole 1369. There was no sign of internal features or floor remains but features 1323, 1334 and 1346 beyond the north end of the building were fired clay hearth remains which may be related to the use of the building. There was some possible building debris (see 1313) in the fill of Middle Saxon ditch 0510 at this point which may relate to 1342. The dimensions of the building, taken from the centre of the posthole positions, were 6.5m x 4m. Although there were many other postholes in this immediate area no others could be ascribed to this building as they were different in style and alignment, (S1).
