Full Description

This was a N-S aligned posthole building that overlay the enclosure ditch 0510 at the south end of the site. This was only partially contained within the excavated area and the dimensions can only be established at > 11.2m x 4.85m. A possible entrance way could be identified in the east wall between postholes 0963, 0960 etc. and a fired clay hearth lay centrally placed just north of the entrance. Because the building lay within a hollow filled with brown sand-loam, the features were difficult to spot until the hollow was emptied which means that some shallower features may have been missed. The building also cut into the top of the ditch fill which allows the possibility that postholes were not identified. However the presence of a fired clay hearth lying over the ditch fill at the north end of the building implies that the floor level within the building survived and that therefore there was more complete preservation in this building than elsewhere. At the north end, where both sides of the building were identified, the wall posts seemed to be roughly opposing; an entranceway can be seen in the centre of the eastern wall line marked by slightly off-set posts 0958 and 072 with an increased gap of 1.7m The postholes were between 0.30m and 0.80m in diameter and between 0.16 and 0.5m deep and were filled with brown silt, (S1).
