Full Description

This earliest phase of occupation was represented by a flat bottomed hollow filled with orange/brown gravely silt (19), and covering an area measuring some 1.60m x 1.80m. This appears to represent the remains of an early sunken featured building, similar to those encountered close by on the Novotel site (IAS 5203), further to thewest, during excavations in 1986. The base ofthe building was cut to a depth of 0.25 - 0.3m below the surface of the natural subsoil. This feature was surrounded by later interventions, which had cut through all the exposed edges of the building. As a result no structural features were revealed within the excavated area. A single sherd of Thetford ware, found in the excavated filling of the building, appeared to derive from an ill-defined feature cutting its surface, which was noted as a possible intervention at the time of the excavation, (S1)
