Full Description

This flat-bottomed, sub-rectangular feature, 2.3m long , 2m wide, and 80-90cm deep, contained one posthole (0047) in the NW corner, and one (0048) in the SW corner. The NE corner had been truncated by EMED pit 0062. The lowest layer of fill, 10cm thick, was a clay loam mixed with patches of greenish yellow sand and shell inclusions, overlain by a second horizontal band of clay loam, 20cm thick.
There was also evidence for an internal lining to the pit. A vertical change in the fill 25cm from the northern edge of the pit, and a tip of orange sand and gravel down the face of the south edge, suggests a collapsed timber lining. The lack of a posthole in the south-east corner of the pit appears to rule out a four post building but a single pitch roof is possible. A posthole (0022), 2m east of posthole 0048, with one sherd of Thetford ware, could be contemporary and might indicate a 2m square structure with the east wall constructed 50cm outside the east edge of the sunken feature (EMED pit 0062 would have removed the NE corner post).
A substantial MLS sunken featured building was excavated immediately east of this site on site IAS 5201 (0003).
