Full Description

One well [0744] was recorded towards the eastern end of the 1998/99 excavation area ). Its identification as a well rather than a soakaway was based on the presence of c.0.6 metre thick clay outer lining (0746) which would have severely hampered the passage of liquid into the surrounding soil. The inner well lining was constructed of mortared red brick (0745) positioned as radially laid headers set in the stiff yellow clay outer lining. The bottom of the well was encountered at 0.98 metres OD with the top brick course of the lining at a level of 2.6 metres OD.(S1).
