Full Description

A cess pit with a masonry lining was constructed in the northern part of the development site, beyond the main area of excavation; it was recorded under watching brief conditions and could not be excavated fully. The structure measured 0.90m square internally and was more than 1.50m deep. It had walls of flint cobbles and occasional red brick fragments, heavily mortared and about 0.20m thick. The cess pit was filled with deposits of soft, light grey sandy silt, mid greyish brown fibrous silt and light yellowish brown ash, containing moderate amounts of CBM and pottery (mainly dated to the late 15th-16th century), and occasional oyster and charcoal, (S1).
