Full Description

A small, complex, curvilinear field system (S1).
A ditched field system of probable later prehistoric date is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs, located immediately to the west of Carmen's Wood in Butley parish, centred roughly on circa TM37894992. The field system is composed of a number of inter-connected sub-rectangular enclosures and trackways. The cropmarks probably represent more than one phase of activity, with field or enclosure boundaries cutting or being cut by trackways and other boundaries. It is not possible to date these features from the aerial photograph evidence or to establish a general relative sequence for these features. However in this instance it may be possible to see part of the development of the site. Towards the northern end of the complex, at circa TM37865000, two linked sub-circular enclosures bounded by a narrow ditch, possibly a 'spectacle' type enclosure are visible. These may represent an early phase of settlement that was superseded by wider ditches of the larger complex, as the wider ditches appear to follow or reuse those of the smaller enclosure. Such enclosures may be representative of the later prehistoric period. On the east of the site the line of a Post-Medieval field boundary is visible as a curvilinear cropmark, cutting across the earlier cropmarks in a roughly north-south direction. This is marked on the first and second edition Ordnance Survey maps and has therefore not been mapped (S2-3).
