Monument record ELV 111 - Earthwork enclosure of unknown date

The earthworks of an incomplete polygonal enclosure of unknown date are visible on the 0.5m resolution Lidar data (S1) within the southern part of the post medieval Elveden Warren (ELV 039). The route of the southern warren boundary bank appears to bisect this enclosure suggesting that it is medieval or earlier in date. Although it must be stated the earthworks in this area are hard to discern confidently due to the tracks and landscaping associated with Centre Parks to the south. Also any earthworks within the area of the resort itself may relate to recent activity or the Second World War bomb store (ELV 106).
Other enclosures in this area (ELV 112-113) were interpreted as being contemporary with the warren and were either used to grow and protect fodder crops or as stock enclosures. However, this enclosure could be much earlier in date. A considerable amount of Iron Age and Roman evidence has been recovered in this area and it is feasible that it represents the survival of an enclosure of this date. However, the interpretation of a medieval stock enclosure may be more realistic.
