Monument record WNG 056 - Medieval to post medieval warren enclosures, boundary bank and cultivation ridges

Please read our .

Summary

The earthworks of a series of boundary banks, enclosures and possible areas of ridge and furrow, or cultivation/plantation ridges are visible on the 0.5m resolution Lidar data within the eastern part of the Wangford Warren (WNG 025). It seems likely that these enclosures are contemporary with the warren and were either used to grow and protect fodder crops or as stock enclosure. The presence of ridges within this area would also suggest areas of cultivation within the warren. The alignment of the ridges within the possible cultivation areas are slightly curved, which could indicate that they are medieval ridge and furrow – and could feasibly pre-date the warren – although they may relate to later, post medieval cultivation ridges and/or plantation ridges.

Full Description

January 2018. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The earthworks of a series of boundary banks, enclosures and possible areas of ridge and furrow, or cultivation/plantation ridges are visible on the 0.5m resolution Lidar data (S1) within the eastern part of the Wangford Warren (WNG 025). The boundary banks would appear to relate to an area of enclosures set against the edge of the warren.
