Full Description
January 2018. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
Post medieval flint mines may be visible as soilmarks, cropmarks and perhaps low earthworks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S5), to the north of the major post medieval flint mining area of Ling Heath, Brandon. They have been mapped by extent. Some of the features were previously noted during a survey of parts of the main Ling Heath flint mining site to the south (S6, SHER BRD 066). Small pit-like features and areas of disturbed ground, visible on 1940s aerial photographs across much of this area, and pits alongside the trackway to the west, could represent further post medieval to modern flint mining activity, and/or Second World War military activity. However, some of the features could instead be of natural origin, relate to agricultural activity or maintenance of the trackway, or be caused by animals such as rabbits. Most of the features visible on the photographs appear to have been levelled, but some could survive below the plantation on the north side of the site.
