Full Description
19 St. Peters Street:
A 17-18th century 2-bay timber-framed and plastered building running parallel to the street with 2 floors, cellar and attic space; a short timber-framed extension wing of the building is at the rear (S1)(S2). Wattle-daub partitioning still visible in the building, revealing original timber-framing, bracing and main beams (S1). The timber-framing is also exposed on the 1st floor (front bay) (S1). The building maintains an original fireplace (in good condition) with original beams and Tudor brickwork (S1). Alterations include: Victorian cellar and Victorian windows (upstairs); modern shop front on the ground floor of the building; the roof may have been altered in the 19th century alongside other alterations as structural evidence indicates a lower roof height originally (approximately 1.6" lower) (S1).
21 St. Peters Street:
A 17-18th century 2-bay timber-framed and plastered building with 2 floors, cellar and attic space but narrower than no. 19 (S1)(S2). The long building with beams and plaster partition wall visible (and running in a direction resembling no. 19) (S1). Alterations include: Victorian cellar, the main fireplace (once a double fireplace) has been bricked in with its original front side removed (all that remains is soot-covered Tudor brickwork - back of hearth), modern windows on the ground floor (S1).
The original partition wall of no. 19 and no. 21 is still present and can be seen through the top and bottom front ranges of no. 19 (S1). Both buildings were altered in the 19th century and later, and the ground floors of both buildings now house 20th century shops (S2).
