Full Description

Geophysical survey did not identify any anomalies of definite archaeological potential. Two parallel linear anomalies in the north of the site are tentatively ascribed some archaeological potential, possibly associated with adjacent quarrying activity. Elsewhere, anomalies have been identified which reflect the former layout of the agricultural landscape as depicted on historical Ordnance Survey mapping. An isolated area of magnetic disturbance against the south-eastern boundary probably locates a spread of demolition material associated with a former building shown on the 1st ed OS map, whilst braod areas of magnetic disturbance correspond to former areas of gravel and/or clay extraction (S1).

2018: An evaluation uncovered a post-medieval agricultural landscape, with periods of small to large scale quarrying activity in the 19th–20th centuries, including an area of woodland clearance probably in the late 19th century that then entered agricultural use. Two trenches in the south-easternmost extent of the site contained undated deposits of extensive burnt debris that contained substantial quantities of fire-cracked flint. The deposits were cut by post-medieval features and had been disturbed significantly in their upper horizon. Soil samples indicated significant intrusive post-depositional bioturbation. The fire-cracked flint deposits were almost identical to middle Bronze Age burnt mound deposits investigated at Belle Baulk, Towcester, Northamptonshire. (S2)
