Full Description

2018: A detailed magnetometer survey revealed no definite archaeological remains. A few rectilinear anomalies were detected but their origin was unclear. They could be archaeological, natural or a result of other modern activity. Evidence of ploughing/ridge and furrow was identified, along with areas of made ground. (S2)

Archaeological evaluation uncovered one undated/natural pit, one possible Saxon pit, and three late medieval to early post-medieval gullies indicative of agricultural land use in the central part of the site. An Edward II farthing, a small number of late medieval/early post-medieval metal accessories and frequent 19th/20th-century finds were recovered from the topsoil. Residual flint debitage in late later fetaures attests to a low level of activity within the vicinity of the site during the prehistoric period. Further mitigation work found continuiations of the two WNW/ESE aligned gullies. The possible Saxon pit turne out to be a NW/SE aligned shallow gully that extended across and beyond the mitigation area and may instead have been of similar late meidveal to early post-medieval date, with the Saxon pottery being residual in the feature (S1).
