Full Description
An archaeological investigation was conducted at Church Cottage following the discovery of an in situ human burial. The area of a proposed pond was investigated which revealed a defined grave cut and fill in section. A small amount of human bone with old breaks were recovered with no further grave cuts observed. Below a levelling or demolition layer several features were identified. This consisted of a circular well or soakaway adjacent to a small circular pit. The pit contained fire-cracked flint and evidence of in situ burning. Other features were flint and cobble wall foundations, wide enough to be load bearing and a wide ditch infilled with large flint cobbles and stone on a north east to south west alignment. Further small flint and cobble wall foundation and a small infilled ditch were also identified (S1).
