Full Description

The building was converted into a shed during the late-20th century, but was formerly among the most impressive mid- 19th century single-storied granaries in the region. It extends to 50 feet in length by 22 feet in overall width (15.25 metres by 6.7) and consists of tarred clay lump on a plinth of brick and flint; the internal floor was suspended on brick piers and the plinths of the principal eastern and western elevations were each pierced by eight arches. The internal tie-beams were interrupted by the posts of an axial passageway between grain bins on each side, thereby extending headroom into the low-pitched slate roof. The original suspended floor and bins have been removed, the arches blocked, and a new concrete floor inserted. The granary, which served a primarily arable farm of 111 acres in 1838, was presumably placed at the entrance to the house moat rather than in the farmyard for security reasons (S1).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
