Farmstead record BLX 038 - Farmstead: Lime Tree Farm

Lime Tree Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed OS map and the Blaxhall Tithe Map. Lime Tree Farmhouse is a substantial gault-brick structure of the late-18th or early-19th century with a slate roof. The farmhouse is detached and set away from the yard. The working buildings are set out in a full regular courtyard with some additional elements attached to one range of the courtyard. There is an additional linear range near to the full courtyard. One range of the full courtyard remains. All other working buidlings have been replaced by larger modern working buildings.

Lime Tree Farmhouse is a substantial gault-brick structure of the late-18th or early-19th century with a slate roof. There is no internal evidence of earlier fabric in the main range, but the rear service wing is a broadly contemporary timber-framed structure with a later facade of red brick. The interior of the house has been much altered, and retains few original fixtures and fittings. The timber-framed barn in the south-eastern corner of the site is of similar date to the house, with carpentry features normally associated with the Napoleonic boom but which may also relate to the end of the 18th century. It too has been much altered but contains evidence of original arch-braces and pegged primary wall-braces of a kind rarely found in the second quarter of the 19th century (S1)

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
