Full Description
No. 5 is listed in conjunction with nos. 6 and 7 to the right (south) and said to be part of the same 17th century jettied house, but is in fact a separate structure of the early- to mid-16th century. Much of its framing has been lost, including all its ground-floor studwork, and in consequence its original layout is unclear; but it may have been designed as a shop with a hall to the rear as there is evidence of an unusual original doorway in the middle of its back wall. By the late-16th century it had been linked to no. 4 Nayland Road on the left and appears to have formed part of a large Elizabethan inn with a rear internal gallery. By the time of the tithe survey in 1837 this inn had been subdivided into an L-shaped terrace of no fewer than 14 cottages in the same ownership, of which seven still survive (S1).
