Full Description

Historic Building Recording of an outbuilding to the rear of the Grade II listed Read House, 119 High Street. The outbuilding was formed by three distinct structure. The first was a timber-framed building built in the 19th century as a small two bay barn measuring 6.5m by 4.7m. The barn remaining largely intact with its original roof with some renewal of the studwork. The internal inspection revealed the original roof structure of staggered butt-purlins and a section of exposed timber framing in the rear wall of re-used timber with a nailed diagonal braved of late 18th to early 19th century date. The second building was a small brick and pantile lean-to shed laid in random bone and shown on the 1843 tithe map. The shed was sub divided during the mid to late 10tj century and is contemporary with the barn. The final building dated from the 20th century and was a corrugated iron lead-to adjoining the rear all of the outbuilding. This is supported by the brick wall of the small lean shed on the north. This building consisted of an enclosed comparted with a boarded wall to the south and an open section to the east. A flint rubble boundary wall was also observed and illustrates the development of the site in the 19th century (S1).
