Full Description

April 2019: A topographic survey identified the remains of four linear mounds on the northern side of a spoil heap marking the northern edge of the extant quarry. The mounds were orientated on a north-west to south-east axsis, broadly parallel to the extant forest track which runs along the east side of the quarry. The mounds were clearly defined apart from at the south-east ends where they exten below the spoil heap. A shallow irregular earthwork, which ran on an appoximate south-west to north-east axis, was also identified. It is likely that the earthworks are associated with the quarrying and foresty activities in the area (S1).

May 2019: The four linear mounds to the north of the extant quarry have been demonstrated to be characteristic of storage of modern (late 19th to 20th century) quarry spoil and not constitute remains of medieval or later pillow mounds. No pre-modern archaeological remains were encountered in the trenches targeted upon the linear mounds, nor in the other trenches to their north-west (S2).
