Monument record NAC 013 - Seven Hills Round Barrows; Hobbin's Belt

Round Barrow - Part of Seven Hills group (see also BUC 006, 007, FXL 011, NAC 004-012).
1764: Barrows opened. "Ashes were found in some. One disclosed pieces of apparently human bone" (R2)(S3).
Numerous (more than 7) round tumuli, some of considerable size. The 1836 OS 1 inch map marks 11 of them (S3).
Barrow partly destroyed for site of railway signal box, undated note by E R H Hancox (position given as TM 2253 4104 )(S1).
1962: Barrow (? bowl) almost totally destroyed, first by the construction of the signal box (now gone), later by the construction of a war-time dug-out and attendant trenches, NNW of the signal box. Too frequently to give any dimensions. Trees and bushes growing on the mound (S1).
1976: Too disturbed to take any measurements (S2).
1981: Not seen (S3).
1986: Signal box now demolished. Mound so cut about as to be an amorphous labyrinth (S3).
1993: `The barrow is visible as an irregular earthen mound, cut by the foundations of a signal box, now completely demolished and removed, and by military trenches dug during World War 2. The original dimensions of the mound are not recorded but, in their present condition, the earthworks stand to a height of circa 1.8m and cover an area measuring circa 27m NW to SE and 16m NE to SW. The highest part of the mound has been augmented by upcast from a large trench, 4m wide, which runs NE to SW through it, and the much lower area to the SE side of the monument is cut by a rectilinear complex of trenches, all circa 1m wide. The remains of the original barrow mound will be preserved beneath the spoil form these later features. Scheduled area redefined November 1993 (S3).
