Full Description

Hillhouse Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed OS map and the Brandeston Tithe map. The farmstead is laid out in a regular E-plan with the farmhouse detached and set away from the yard. The farmstead sits alongside a private track in an isolated position. The working buildings have been altered with the addition of a cover over the yards (S1-4).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.

The timber framed five-bay barn and cartlodge (much altered) are the earliest elements of the farm buildings, dating from the 18th century. The barn has been re-roofed; it would originally have had a thatched roof with a steeper pitch. The E range on a N/S axis was probably built in the late 18th century and joined to the barn by an early 19th century three-bay addition. The six bay open-fronted shed and the stable are late 18th century. The corrugated metal lean to was added to the E elevation in the mid 20th century. The timber framed, corrugated asbestos covered yard was added in the mid 20th century and the small, single storey stable was added to the S elevation of the cart lodge in the late 20th century (S5).
