Farmstead record CRE 031 - Farmstead: Sparke's Farm

1975: A preliminary building inspection was undertaken of the farmhouse which was at the time run own and in need of extensive restoration works. The farmhouse is 16th century and built in the "long house" tradition. There is a cellar and 2 star cases. The house is timber framed with red brick infill and most of the outside has been covered with pebble dash. The roof is covered with original plain clay tiles. Internally, rot and decay has been permitted in the timber floors. The cellar is flooded with rain water. (S1)

Sparke's Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed OS map. The farmstead is laid out in a regule E-plan with additional detached elements. The farmhouse is detached and set away from the yard. The farmstead sits alongside a private track in an isolated location. This farmstead survives intact.

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
