Full Description
2019: Evaluation identified medieval occupation activity, including possible structural evidence, along the road frontage and a series of undated ditches likely to represent former field boundaries. The broken blade end of a Bronze Age axe head was recovered from the topsoil (S1).
2020: Excavation identified ditched land divisions or property boundaries, a potential occupation layer and a parallel line of six in-situ oak posts. All of the evidence suggests domestic activity in a planned arrangement of boundaries perpendicular to the road named The Green, suggesting some degree of organised land arrangement and may relate to activity at a toft (S2).
2019:Archaeological evaluation identified features, with the greatest density in the north eastern part of the site. These comprised a series of undated ditches likely to represent former field boundaries. The broken blade end of a Bronze Age axe head was recovered from the topsoil. Signs of medieval occupation, including possible structural evidence, were found along the road frontage where the presence of buildings was suggested by an 18th century map. An associated finds assemblage dated this activity to the late 12th–13th century and was dominated by domestic vessels in fabrics typical of production sites in north Essex. A Roman brick fragment was also present alongside the medieval material and is probably reused or residual. Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2019 (S3).
