Full Description

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.

18th November 2019: Old Hall is a timber-framed 16th century building that has undergone considerable alteration and extension in the later part of the 20th century. The original structure appears to have comprised of a parlour to the south and service accomodation in the short cross-wing but the latter is conjectured to have been rebuilt in the 17th century to accommodate the enlarged chimneystack to the north elevation. Much later in the mid 19th century a north extension to the cross wing was added to the west of the cross-wing and the single storey extensions to the southeast corner and west were added in the late 20th century. These cumulatively disguise to some degree the modest original footprint and level
of accommodation. Plans from the 1960s clearly show the building as two separate dwellings and an application was submitted to convert it back to a singular house (S5)
