Full Description

Site of house and park, depicted on Hodskinson's 1783 map of Suffolk and described in editions of Kirby's 'Suffolk Traveller' (1735, 1764). The history of the house is recorded from the early 18th century. It may represent one of an increased number of parks created from the middle decades of the 18th century onwards for wealthy residences within reach of urban centres (see Tom Williamson, referenced in S1), although it may have had earlier origins (S1)

Captain Robert Harland and his wife Francis purchased an estate in Sproughton in 1716, and the residence passed to their son Robert Harland on his marriage to Susannah in 1749. Robert died at his Sproughton residence in 1784. In 1764, the seat of Robert Harland is described as 'partly rebuilt and greatly improved'. Robert and Susannah's son Robert pulled down the residence at Sproughton between 1790 and 1794 (S1)
