Full Description
Manor Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed Os map. The farmstead is laid out in two regular L-plans with additional detached elements. The farmhouse is detached and set away from the yard. The farmstead sits alongside a public road in a hamlet location. This farmstead survives intact with modern sheds on site (S1-4).
Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
The farmstead comprises of a series of agricultural buildings of various style, condition, size and date. The farmhouse is to the south-west of the barns and dates from the early 17th century. The barns date from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Manor Farmhouse is a two storey structure with an attic. The front elevation with the principal entrance comprises the west elevation overlooking farmland. It is three main bays with a lobby entrance plan, but with an additional bay at the northern end making it asymmetrical around the main chimney stack. It is tmber framed and plastered with a 20th century concrete tile roof. The windows are later casements. The east elevation fronting the yard is much plainer with fewer openings, giving it a more functional character reflecting its orientation onto the working part of the farmstead. Barn B is an open fronted former cart shed. It has a red brick base with weatherboarded sides and a pantile roof. Elements of the brickwork may relate to the structure first recorded on the 1882-82 Ordnance Survey plan, but it has been much altered. Barn C is assumed to be the structure recorded on the 1837 tithe map. It is suggested that the side aisles are a later addition, and may have been added between 1837 and 1881. It is a dark stained weatherboarded timber-framed structure with a pantile roof. Two large openings positioned on opposite sides suggest it was used as a threshing barn. Internally it comprises broadly five bays with tie-beams supported with arch braces. It is clear that timbers have been pieced in and replaced over the years, and redundant peg holes suggest other timbers have been removed or used from elsewhere. Barn D is a single storey liner structure along the northern edge of the yard, it appears to be the former dairy however has been much remodelled. It is of timber-framed construction built off a red brick plinth with a pitched pantiled roof. The extensive blockwork suggested it has been substantially rebuilt. Barn E encloses the eastern side of the yard. It is a two storey pitched structure with a sigle-storey lean-to against the southern gable, and a single storey open sided shelter-shed attached to the northern end. The barn has a red brick and flint eastern elevation and the remainder is a timber frame construction with a clay pantile roof. The barn is present on the 1837 tithe map but appears to have undergone may alterations over the years (S5).
