Full Description

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.

The main barn is an early-mid 19th century 7 bay timber-framed structure with a projetcing east midstray. Only part of 19th century roof structure remain and many of these appear to abe reworked older timbers due to previous mortice holes showing they were previously sole or head plates. The midstray is a later addition but was added pre-1880s. The older timbers are Elm. The main barn roof above plate would have seen principal rafters, collars and rafters all now lost and replaced with a modern softwood and crinkly tin roof. High level studding to gables is largely intact indicating the pitch is still as per the original pitch. The floor is concrete and of mid to late 20th century origin. The barn is timber clad with a softwood machined weatherboard painted black. The machined nature of these boards and treated appearance suggest a much later replacement (S1).
