Full Description

Flint Hall, Creeting St Mary. 19th century farmstead and farmhouse with converted buildings. Loose courtyard three-sided plan formed by working agricultural buildings. The farmhouse is detached facing side on to the yard. The farmstead is extant. Located within an isolated position (S1-6).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.

One of the structures is a timber framed, five bay threshing barn, clad in weatherboard, set on a low flint plinth and with a replacement roof covering of corrugated sheeting. On its south side is a central midstrey with a pantiled open implement store to its left and a pantiled store to its right. This in turn Is connected to a red brick outbuilding which runs southwards. The midstrey has a pair of timber doors and a similar pair are on the opposite, north side. A weatherboarded, single storey lean-to runs the length of the west gab and a small lean-to shed, also boarded, is attached on the barn’s east gable. The timber frame appears to be of a single build and strengthened with diagonal bracing, with sawn timber studs and occasional hewn curved members. The principal trusses have bolted knee braces and the roof has a single through purlin supported by collars. The rafters are of narrow scantling and suggest the roof was formerly thatched. Flint Hall is not present on Kirby's map of 1766 but Hodskinson's map of 1786 does show building present. Both the farmhosue and the barn are clearly present on the 1838 tithe map (S7).
