Full Description
The trial trenches also revealed the buried soil layer containing late medieval – early post medieval pottery and animal bone. The layer was present to a uniform thickness across the whole site and finds were present throughout. The presence of animal bone suggests that this deposit is associated with a midden. No archaeological features were revealed below the buried soil layer suggesting the site was undeveloped and outside the settlement until recent times when the house of Lilliput was built (S1).
Archaeological test pitting, and monitoring of the service trenches and ground reduction of the building footprint also revealed the presence of the medieval buried soil layer and middening. The test pits showed a diminution of pottery quantity towards the west pointing towards the main focus of activity in the medieval period being to the east of the current site. An undated ditch was revealed at the northern end of the service trench was possibly a roadside boundary ditch, backfilled as part of the landscaping and/or enlargement of the garden. The presence of the buried soil and middening, and the absence of other archaeological features might suggest that this site lay just beyond the western edge of the medieval village (S2).
