Full Description

In trench 1, medieval occupation was discovered by way of a spread or layer; finds of animal bone wre made from food waste, the pottery finds indicated a date from the 12th to 14th century. Also a post-medieval ditch and one other possible post-medieval ditch was located in this trench, dated from pottery sherd finds. In trench 10, a series of intercutting pits were also possibly from the medieval period, finds of pottery dated one or more of the group of pits from the 12th to the 14th century. Notable finds were blooms or slag from smithing, undated; a few pottery sherds from the medieval period. Heavy truncation by a field drain did not allow a definitive date and sequence for the pit group, which rendered the pits as not having sealed, undisturbed contexts (S1). Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2020 (S2).
