Full Description

Yewtree Farm, Old Newton with Dagworth. 19th century farmstead and 16th century farmhouse. Single barn plan formed by working agricultural buildings. The farmhouse is set away from the yard. The farmstead is extant. Located within a hamlet (S1-5).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.

The farmhouse is a two storey timber framed and rendered building. The roof has a concrete finish overlaying a formerly thatched structure. The frame forms three cells with an entrance lobby from the west and axial stack. Single storey lean-to elements have been added to the south and north ends. The windows and doors are principally modern 20th century casements. The timber frame has been visually lost internally by plasterboard linings although investigation shows framing remains with areas of clay daub
infills intact. The original two cells sit either side of the main chimney stack with typical winder staircase. A further two storey cell, likely Victorian or slightly earlier occupies the South end of the arrangement with lean too single storey beyond (S6).
