Full Description

Wilby Manor, Wilby. 19th century farmstead and 16th century farmhouse with converted buildings. Regular courtyard multi-yard plan formed by working agricultural buildings. The farmhouse is set away from the yard. Significant loss (over 50%) of the traditional farm buildings. Located within an isolated position (S1-6).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.

Wilby Manor Farm barn is now an isolated building, although not far away from the farmhouse, it was once part of a larger complex which is now sadly lost. The earliest part of the barn is a small 17th century timber-framed three-bay storage barn with an upper hayloft. The pitch of the roof inficates that it was originally thatched. The roof consists of a traditional A-frame truss (plt. 24) with tie beams, collars and butt-purlins; there is no longitudinal ridge pole.
