Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.

A 17th century 3 bay timber framed barn. To the rear of the barn is a small Victorian stable block which dates from c1860. Whilst not included in the listing and post 1840 tithe, it forms part of the historic grouping for the site and is considered within the curtilage of the listed barn. The 3 earlier bays comprise 8 posts (jewelled to ends), with inset roof plate, tied with cross beams over. Additional posts have been added to either side of the east doorway and are clearly reused timbers, possibly from the earlier farmhouse, which map evidence suggest was demolished c1910. Some of the original curved corner bracing to the framework remains, (with evidence of corresponding open mortices) though these have largely decayed and been replaced by later diagonal bracing, fixed to the internal face of posts and studs. Similarly deep mortice joints exist to principal posts where heavy earlier braces to tie beams have been replaced by later knee braces. The frame sits on a timber plate with brick plinth, which is partially obscured internally by later boarding. The structure to the porch is of later date and of lower quality timbers to that of the main barn. However, a porch is clearly evident on the 1840 tithe map and would have been added towards the end of the C18th to improve the barn for the processing of grains. The roof structure, comprising rafters, supported by purlins and collars at mid point, is a later replacement of the earlier structure, though retaining its original pitch (S5).
