Summary

The Newmarket Railway had been authorised in 1846 as a branch of the Newmarket and Chesterton Railway, but was not built. By the 1870s a more direct line to the North from Ipswich was required and the Ely and Newmarket Railway resurfaced, reauthorised in 1875 and completed in 1879.
