Full Description

Archaeological evaluation was undertaken focusing on the burial ground associated with the former Mutford and Lothingland Incorporated Hundred Workhouse, shown on historic mapping. A total of 10 trenches were excavated with forty graves identified in six of them. Contaminated ground encountered at the western end of the site meant that two trenches here were abandoned but they did suggest that modern intrusion appears to have truncated any burials in that part of the site. The southern and eastern boundary ditches were identified and shown to have been backfilled during the later 20th century with the extant northern boundary ditch still in use (S1).
