Full Description

A number of features were identified over the course of the trial trench evaluation as being of archaeological origin. Features investigated primarily comprised discrete and linear features of possible boundary or enclosure ditches, representative of small scale or peripheral settlement activity. Features identified in a concentration in the northwest of the site, along with a few isolated features in the east of site, produced evidence of the earliest activity on the site dating from the Neolithic to Bronze Age. Further periods of occupation were identified dating to the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age and Middle to Late Iron Age, with an early phase of Roman activity of the mid 1st - 2nd century AD also identified in this part of the site. A concentration of predominantly linear features in the south of the site were identified as dating to two distinct Roman phases (mid 1st - 2nd century and 3rd - 4th century) as evidence of continued or repeated phases of small scale or peripheral occupation activity. A scattering of east to west extant field boundaries were also located in the central area of the site of a possible Medieval or Post Medieval date (S1).
