Summary

Reeve Memorial was erected in memory of Richard Henry Reeve, Lord of the Manor of Ashby. The monument was erected on land that Reeve had presented to the town. Reeve died in 1880 but it is not clear whether the monument dates from 1880 as it was not in its current position until 1921-21. The memorial is a Portland stone column, 3 metres high, surmounted by a bronze winged lion. The plinth is decorated with bronze swags. The artist is unknown. The monument was originally errected as a water fountain, but the fittings for this have been removed.

Full Description

This is a portland stone column, 3 metres high, surmounted by a bronze lion, situated in a public garden on the seafront at South Lowestoft.

The plinth is inscribed to the memory of Richard Henry Reeve, Lord of the Manor of Lowestoft, who died 1880. It is unclear whether the monument dates from 1880, or whether it was erected later, but it stands on land which Reeve himself had presented to the town. The "obelisk" marked on the current OS map is clearly visible on the 1927 map, but not on the 1905 map. (1)
