Monument record LWT 599 - Remains of wreck on the South Beach at Lowestoft

Please read our .

Summary

Remains of wreck on the South Beach at Lowestoft, south of the Pier and west of the breakwater, uncovered by tides in 2006, then not exposed again until 2010. The remains are located just north of a set of timber posts just protruding from the beach within the intertidal zone and are seen to comprise the bottom structure of a timber hull. In this position the manner of loss was by stranding. The identity of the LILY OF DEVON has been suggested for this vessel; for the account of the wreck event for that vessel, lost in 1927, see 1543665. Status: Site

Full Description

Photograph of the vessel as uncovered shows her lying at right angles to the shore, south of the South Pier at Lowestoft and west of, and at right angles to, the breakwater. The wreck lies parallel to and immediately north of a set of three timber posts which may be the remains of a groyne, and is clearly seen to lie within the inter-tidal zone. It is therefore clear that the manner of loss was by stranding. (1)

Wreck identified as the LILY OF DEVON and said to have lain for many years on the South Beach, when they were blown up as a hazard to the public. A photograph of a rigging block which was found at the site is shown. (2)

Not charted by United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO). (3)

Not seen on Google Earth imagery since tide covered site at the time of photography. (4)
