Full Description
The cropmark of a possible Bronze Age ring ditch can be seen on EH Reconnaissance photographs taken in 2011. This ring ditch is situated to the east of Price Wood at TL 7941 5113.
May 2026. South-West Suffolk Claylands Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AI&M) Project.
A ring ditch and part of what may be a curvilinear outer enclosure, all of probable Bronze Age or Iron Age date, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The ring ditch is rather irregular and oval in plan but fairly large (up to 27m in diameter), and the site could be funerary in nature, although the outer enclosure would be an unusual feature (they could relate to separate phases of activity). Alternatively, the site could relate to settlement, the ring ditch representing a small enclosure (it is rather large for a roundhouse) within a larger curvilinear enclosure or boundary bank. A Bronze age date is more likely for the former interpretation, and Iron Age date for the latter. Its interpretation as an Iron Age settlement is perhaps more likely to be correct. The site is broadly comparable to other possible prehistoric settlement sites within the survey area, including SHER PSG 052 1.75km to the southwest.
