Monument record HWN 052 - Cropmarks of probably Bronze Age or Iron Age ring ditch and possible curvilinear enclosure

Please read our .

Summary

A ring ditch and part of what may be a curvilinear outer enclosure, all of probable Bronze Age or Iron Age date, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The ring ditch is rather irregular and oval in plan but fairly large (up to 27m in diameter), and the site could be funerary in nature, although the outer enclosure would be an unusual element in this context. Alternatively, the site could relate to settlement, the ring ditch representing a small enclosure (it is rather large for a roundhouse) within a larger curvilinear enclosure or boundary bank. A Bronze age date is more likely for the former interpretation, and Iron Age date for the latter. Its interpretation as an Iron Age settlement is perhaps more likely to be correct.

A ring ditch and part of what may be a curvilinear outer enclosure, all of probable Bronze Age or Iron Age date, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The ring ditch is rather irregular and oval in plan but fairly large (up to 27m in diameter), and the site could be funerary in nature, although the outer enclosure would be an unusual feature (they could relate to separate phases of activity). The site is broadly comparable to other possible prehistoric settlement sites within the survey area, including SHER PSG 052 1.75km to the southwest.
