Full Description

1830 wreck of English collier which foundered in Hollesley Bay during a gale; a wooden sailing vessel.
Status: Casualty

`Orford, 7th November. The SALTER, Reed, of Newcastle, foundered last night at her anchors in Hollesley Bay and it is feared all on board drowned.' (2)

`Yarmouth, Nov. 7....It blew a gale last night from SSW to S.' (3)

NB: Source (2) states the vessel as being a collier, extrapolated from her place of registration. Coal was certainly the chief export from Newcastle but it does not necessarily follow that all ships belonging to this port were colliers.

Master: Reed (1)(2)
Crew Lost: All (1)(2)

Date of Loss Qualifier: Actual date of loss
