Full Description
1804 wreck of English snow which foundered in Hollesley Bay following a collision, while en route from Baltiysk to London with wheat; a wooden sailing vessel.
Status: Casualty
`Harwich, Nov. 4. We have experienced a heavy gale of wind since yesterday morning...A brig belonging to Yarmouth, loaded with wheat, is sunk in Hosely Bay; the crew fortunately saved themselves by taking to the boat.' (1)
`The snow TROWBRIDGE, Captain William Smith, of Yarmouth, bound from Pillau to London, with 1500 quarters of wheat, was, on Saturday se'nnight, about half-past 8pm, driven from her best bower anchor in Holesly Bay, by a very heavy gale of wind from the ENE; and being remarkably dark, she drove athwart a collier, which stove in her starboard side, and she sunk in less than 20 minutes; providentially the captain's wife, and the ship's company, consisting of 8 persons, had just time to take to the small boat; but, being extremely cold and fatigued, they were nearly 10 hours before they landed at Harwich. The long boat, and several pieces of the wreck, have drifted into Woodbridge Harbour.' (2)
NB: The issue date of source (2) would appear to indicate the date of loss as 10-NOV-1804; however, it is not uncommon for such reports to appear verbatim without altering the date of loss accordingly, and in the light of source (1) the date of loss appears to be the previous Saturday, viz. 03-NOV-1804.
