Full Description

Possible remains of 1916 wreck of British paddle steamer, located approximately 3 miles SE of Bawdsey, between the Cutler and South Bawdsey buoys. This wreck site was the subject of dispersal activity in 1918. If the LUDLOW, she was a steel-built vessel, which foundered while in tow for Harwich after being mined on minesweeping duties. The account of the wreck event is recorded at TM 53 SW 34 / 901502.

30-MAY-1918: Being dispersed.

08-JUL-1950: Swept, foul at 28ft, clear at 27ft; surrounding depth
36ft, least depth by echosounder 31ft.

11-MAY-1973: Position 51 57 59N 001 29 08E, estimated length 150ft, height 10ft, in 60ft.

21-AUG-1973: Position 51 57 58N 001 29 09.5E. Sonar echosounder and drift sweep clear at 8.5m (28ft), foul at 8.7m; echosounder 8.7m in 11.7m, scour 11.8m. Relatively flat bottom, very good sonar contact. Lying 340/160 degrees, but submerged well into sand.

30-OCT-1984: Examined in 51 57 59N 001 29 08E. Least echosounder depth 9.7m, in general depth 12.5m. Scour depth 13m. Side scan sonar height 3.4m, length 50m approx. Lying 160/340 degrees and wreck is breaking up towards the NE. (1)

Charted without qualification as HMS LUDLOW in 12m general depth, 50m long, on a sandy seabed. Seen to be located between the Cutler Buoy to the NW and the South Bawdsey Buoy to the SE. (2)

Located between the Cutler and South Bawdsey buoys as described above, 3 miles SE of Bawdsey. (3)
