Full Description

WELSH BRIGANTINE, 1874
Status: Casualty

`It would appear that the MALVINA had on board 185 tons of roofing slate, 85 tons more than her registered tonnage. A cargo of this description of dead weight, so much in excess of the registered tonnage, seemed to the Court the proximate cause of loss. The evidence showed that when the vessel was compellled to put back from the Texel the leakage greatly increased, which was probably caused by the deadweight cargo straining.' (2)
