Full Description

This church lies within the diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, archdeanconry of Sudbury, deanery of Thingoe, status rectory (S3). The structure is : chancel, nave, S aisle, S porch (S2). There is a late C12 doorway to the N of the nave and a very plain C14 S doorway had the arch-mould recut with the casement mould in the early C16. The nave has been shortened at the W end. The arcade is C14 with octagonal piers, moulded caps and double-chamfered arches. The nave roof is an arch-braced tie-beam with an arch-braced collar above. The font is Norman C12 but was recut in C15. Two wall paintings appear in the nave; one representing St George and the Dragon (circa 1400) and the other St Christopher. The S aisle has a C14 buttress and window and two windows with glass circa 1855 but in the C13 style. The W tower is down and 3 bells are hung at the W end of the S aisle. The S porch is open and wooden. Part of the lower panels of the rood screen now form the back of the organist's bench. In 1869 the church was restored and the two wall paintings were discovered at this time (S2). There is a memorial to Arthur Young (1741-1820) the agriculturalist and social and political writer in the church and his tomb lies in the churchyard (S2).
A letter was read from Mr J Adey Repton, on the subject of fonts ... to the quarterly meeting at Bury St Edmunds, March 15, 1848. "The font at Bradfield near Bury is deserving of close examination; its square bason (sic) and billet ornaments at the bottom denote a true Norman font; but the quatrefoil ornaments upon it appear to have been recarved about the time of Henry VII. The rich canopies, or ornamented covers, are of later date than (Norman) fonts themselves" (S1).
