Full Description

1820 wreck of brig which foundered off the Holm Sand during a gale; a wooden sailing vessel.
Status: Casualty

NB: The accounts for losses off Lowestoft in this gale of 20 to 22-OCT-1820 are very confused, and this vessel may be identifiable with any one of the other accounts for this gale (q.v.).

In particular, this vessel may be identifiable from its position "without" the Holm Sand with either of the two vessels (q.v.) which are recorded as being lost on the Beacon Ridge in the Stanford Channel, which is in the vicinity of the Holm Sand:

`...in the violent gale of Saturday and Sunday last...' (1)

`In the gale of last Friday night...

`Yarmouth, Oct. 23...A brig, name not known, has also foundered without the Home Sand; crew lost.' (2)

`Yarmouth, Oct. 23...other vessels are reported to have foundered off Lowestoffe...' (3)

Crew Lost: all (2)

Date of Loss Qualifier: A
