Full Description

The quarry extension site lies within a potentially archaeologically significant area for prehistoric remains. During the Second World War, the site lay within the airfield of RAF Tuddenham, and geophysical survey has shown that the main runway ran across it. The programme of works exposed no significant archaeological remains with only modern features, associated with the former airfield encounter. A series of 10 test pits were excavated across the site of a proposed extension to Marston’s Pit Quarry, Suffolk to assess whether any of the geological deposits present within the application site contained or had the potential to contain Palaeolithic archaeological remains. Recorded deposits comprised glaciofluvial silt and gravel, floodplain fluvial sand, silty sand and sandy organic sediments. These were overlaid by deposits of fine-grained sand of likely aeolian origin. Deposits containing in situ and reworked archaeological materials of Palaeolithic age were not found within the PEA and no artefacts were recovered from any of the test pits. These results indicate that deposits containing or having the potential to contain Palaeolithic artefacts and other materials were not present within the application area (S1).
