Full Description
A community fieldwalking survey was focussed on the south-east corner of Sayers Breck, a large field of rough pasture managed by Suffolk Wildlife as part of their Lackford Lakes estate. The field had not been recently ploughed but extensive rabbit burrowing and other disturbance had brought artefacts to the surface. Two transects were walked, each of 150m length and 25m wide, and fieldwalking finds were then grouped withing 25m by 25m squares across transects. Thirty-two members of the public participated across the two days of fieldwalking and a further ten individuals were involved during a third day when finds were washed and processed. A wide variety of finds were recovered including flint blades and flakes of Mesolithic and Neolithic type and pottery and other artefacts dating to the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman, Late Anglo-Saxon and medieval periods. Of particular importance was a late Anglo-Saxon coin belonging to Eadred, King of All England and dated c.946-955 (Fig. 14). A medieval coin was also found and this has been identified as a silver penny belonging to Edward I and dated c.1299 to 1301.
