Full Description

2019: 121 High Street is a Grade II listed building partly dating from the 17th century and is jointly listed with 119 High Street which it is attached. Both buildings formed the George Inn from around 1720 and a detached room at the rear of the house was used for holding Petty sessions during the 19th century. The Inn closed in 1872 and was converted to a house shortly after as well as being used as a shop by 1921 until the late 20th Century, when it reverted back to residential use. 121 High Street had undergone considerable alteration, with only part of the original George Inn remaining. The building retains much of the 17th century timber frame in the rear wing, including a tripartite window and the original roof frame. Its 17th century form is evidence despite an unsympathetic single storey extension which result4ed in some loss of significance (S1).

Heritage Impact Assessment considered the impact of a proposal for a loft conversion and internal alterations. With the exception of a first floor bathroom the proposals would have less than substantial impact on the fabric, architectural and historic interest and significance of the listed building. The proposed structural repairs and conservation of the historic fabric will sustain and enhance the heritage asset (S2).
