Full Description

Ring ditch, circa 30m diameter. S arc lost against modern hedge boundary. Possible central `posthole', similar feature or cross tree from post mill? (S1).
Inadvertently destroyed in works for the ski slope 1989. No notification of its presence on a development plan was received from the planning authority. No trace survived by the time of visit as the area had been lowered well into the subsoil (S2)
A possible Medieval or Post Medieval windmill is visible as the cropmark of a ring ditch on aerial photographs, centred on TM 15704121 on Bourne Hill, Wherstead. The ring ditch encloses an area 21m in diameter and its southern side has been obscured by the modern field boundary. It is possible that marks in the centre of the ring ditch could represent the remains of the cross tree from a post mill but equally this mark may be an optical illusion created by the agricultural marks and other background noise. Though the central mark suggests that the ring ditch is the site of a post mill, it is also possible that the ring ditch represents the remains of a ploughed out round barrow of Bronze Age date.
